With the help of 15 volunteers in May, who sacrificed their family time and work pay, we accomplished half a year’s plan in one week! They slept in tents in 40 degree temperatures, ate most meals by the campfire, and had limited access to showers. It was their tireless spirit that inspired and encouraged our family. The humor the team brought was infectious. Their joy was so inviting. It is with grateful hearts that we admire the work of the volunteers from Warehouse OC.

Our open land has taken shape for Heroes Homestead. The spring pasture for lambs and goats was extended for sustainable grazing. The fences are secure enough for little ones to lean in and climb up to reach the animals. We also have means for a small petting zoo and animal interactions. Two large barns were relocated on the property to more feasible locations and power was extended from the home to outside. We have the panel installed and ready for extensions. A strong team of fathers and sons relocated the hen house using logs and rolling it over 300 feet.

The ground has been broken and the main entrance established with a cedar fence that will continue to mark the main driveway someday to be lined with shade trees. Past the spring pen is a birthing barn, and the place of the future cider press orchard and petty zoo. With the help of volunteers and corporate sponsors, we completed a 6,800 square foot garden. The produce is for veteran families. It’s all part of our hope to bring dignity and grace to the transition from deployment to civilian life.
